DETROIT, September 12 -- Plymouth Valiant, Plymouth Duster, Dodge Dart and Dodge Demon prices were announced today by Chrysler Corporation. These compact cars go on sale Tuesda, September 15.

Manufacturer's suggested retail prices are increased an average of $143 or 6.2 percent when compared with 1970 models and weighted according to the sales volume of each line. The price increases include $35 for an improved Cleaner Air System, now standard equipment on all compacts.

Optional equipment prices are selectively increased and average 6.8 percent over last year.

The company said all 1971 Chrysler compact cars will carry a 12 month or 12,000 mile new car warranty.

The addition of the Dodge Demon and the Plymouth Scamp will offer buyers a choice of 16 compacts in the 1971 model year.

Thus far in 1970 the Chrysler compacts are leading the industry in total sales in this growing segment of the market. In August Valiant and Dart took 41.4 percent of the domestic compact car market, their highest market penetration of the year.

Valiant, led by its two-door coupe the Duster, is the No. 1 success car in the industry in percentage increase over the previous model year. Through August the company had reported 209,711 retail deliveries, an increase of 169 percent over the 77,882 Valiants sold through the 11 months of the last model year.

Rally road wheels and front disc brakes which were standard last year on the Duster 340 are now optional. Chrome tail pipe tips on the Duster 340 are now standard. There are no other equipment changes in the 1971 compact models.

Standard on all compact models is an improved Cleaner Air System. This system, which includes a new Vapor Saver, now reduces hydrocarbon emissions to 80 percent below the level of ten years ago, and reduces carbon monoxides by some 70 percent below the level of 1961 cars. For cars sold in California, controls have been added which reduce oxides of nitrogen by 33 percent.

New standard safety and anti-theft features for 1971 include a fuel tank design change to minimize filling spitback, pushbutton safety belt releases, improved fuel tank security, integral head restraints on some bench seats, keyless door locking system, and improved brakes.

Following is a schedule of new 1971 prices compared with the 1970 prices to the extent possible. All prices are the manufacturer's suggested retail prices at Detroit, Michigan. They exclude dealer new car preparation, destination and state or local taxes.
