The "Hang Ten" made the auto show circuit last year -- an exercise in design with a surfer theme to appeal to youthful-minded buyers.
"Excellent acceptance from viewers has resulted in the Hang Ten decorator package being offered with our 1974 Dart line to meet heightened interest in our compacts," said Richard D. McLaughlin, Dodge general sales manager.
The eggshell white exterior paint is highlighted by unique red and blue "wave crest" tape stripes and "Hang Ten" decal.
The fold down seat allows 6 1/2 feet of interior space through the trunk to the back of the front seats to stow gear . . . like a surfboard, for example.
For added sporty appeal the Hang Ten may be equipped with optional "Tuff" steering wheel, raised white letter or white sidewall tires, manually-operated, factory installed metal sunroof, or choice of full or canopy vinyl roof, in white only.
"The Hang Ten," said McLaughlin, "is the result of a more practical approach to show car design which can be applied to current cars that people actually own, instead of futuristic 'dream' models which are pretty to look at, but which rarely become reality.
"Our design department is responding with cars and trucks color-keyed and oriented to personal interests, hobbies or topical themes.
"In trying to learn what buyers want and then cutting down response time in delivering it, our designers go to great lengths to find, for example, the orange knit swimsuit material incorporated into the "Hang Ten" trim.
"The surfer motif is one of many themes that have been given consideration as a decorator car package, and the Hang Ten is a product of the trend toward more distinctive cars."
