Having hunted down many-a-bull stories, I had my doubts but after many more weeks of looking at junk I decided to take a look. I enquired as to the owner's phone number, we couldn't locate it at first but after a few calls to friends of friends and waiting more weeks to finally get the number, I called. The owner told me it was a 1969 Dart with a 340 in it. He wasn't sure of the mileage and said it was in decent shape. He wasn't sure how much he wanted for it, but he said to come and take a look. It turned out that he lived quite a distance from me as well as a costly ferry ride in the middle. This was beginning to be a bit of a pain in the butt so I put off going to look at it for a couple more weeks. Finally, in utter frustration of not being able to find a decent car, I decided to make the trip.
Another friend and I set out on our journey and eventually arrived at the address he had given me. The owner came out of the house and informed us that we would have to travel back toward the direction we had come because the car wasn't at his house. I'd be lying if I said that didn't tick me off but..... he also said that it had never been to his house because there's no garage (and it had always been in the garage). Now he had my attention.
We followed him across town to this little tiny garage off an alley in the 'downtown' district. Upon opening the garage we discovered a covered car with spider webs from the middle down and dust all over the top of it. I lifted up the back of the cover and I see a 1973 license plate. Turned out he hadn't driven the car since then! We pulled the cover off to see this beautiful 1969 GTS 340 car! The car was near flawless! I walked around the car a couple times and I could hardly beleive what I had in front of me. Without a doubt it had been sitting a long time. I didn't bother trying to start it. I had to have it!
After working out the right price the owner handed me the original keys, the bill of sale, the ad pamphlets and the service history. I trailered the car home and gave it the once over. The brakes were sticky and the rubber gaskets were cracking so I disassembled almost everything and put it back together fresh (and stock exept for some rallye wheels). Everyone compliments me on the restoration; some don't believe me when I tell them it's original. I love the car and I'll never sell it. Here I was convinced I was on another goose chase and almost never bothered with it. Always check out those rumors of old Dodges. Sometimes they really pay off!
